@z827: alright then, challenge accepted. I will try to explain each and every one of the things you mentioned. However,
I note that you still haven't said precisely what you're having problems
with.
Seriously , reading through that guideline makes me feel like the time when I was
reading an annual stock report or a contract back when I was still new to the concept of such documents.
In what way exactly? Too short? Too long? Too much information? Too little information? Too formal? Too difficult to
understand?
Other image sites are generally more lax in it's tagging system
Yes, and I find them a pain to use because the tags aren't well managed, unlike here. Some even allow users to add
whatever tags they want without them being monitored, which results in 5 tags that describe the same character.
Concept for adding new tags to an existent series / character /
company
If the main tag (series, game etc.) is already in the database and properly set, yet you discover some gallery items
with, say, characters that don't appear on the main tag's page, just add them like you would any tag (on the right of
the screen, click the "Add tags" link and enter your tag). Make sure the tag isn't already added, sometimes
the tags are there but are in a misspelled/truncated/reversed (e.g. LAST NAME FIRST NAME instead of the other way
around) form.
Concept for non-existent characters / series in the database
Add them as normal Theme-type tags (using the method above), then head on over to the TagAdmin thread and request for
them to be switched to the proper tag type, like this:
- Type of tag you want it to be, instead of Theme -
LINK TO TAG (Mangaka/Studio name)
So, for Series, this would be (I'll be using an actual tag):
SERIES
DURARARA! (Suzuhito Yasuda, Brains Base)
You don't need to include both a Mangaka and a Studio, but it's highly recommended wherever possible.
For characters, this would be:
CHARACTER
Izaya Orihara (DURARARA!, Males, Short Hair,
Black Hair, Brown Eyes) alias Orihara Izaya
"DURARARA!, Males, Short Hair, Black Hair, Brown Eyes" are all parent tags, which means they will be
automatically added whenever you add the "Izaya Orihara" tag to an image. Remember to never add tags that
don't apply to all (or at least most) instances of the characters. For example, you mustn't add color tags to characters
from mangas which only appear in color when on covers and the rest of the gallery is made up of black & white
scans.
Concept for adding aliases AND Concept of Aliases
Aliases are alternate names for tags. They can be:
- for Series/Games/Visual Novels etc. : names in other languages than the one accepted as official in the MT
database;
- for Characters:
--- reverse names: the accepted format is First Name Last Name (e.g. Izaya Orihara - the reverse/alias would be Orihara
Izaya);
--- alternate egos (though these can be considered spoilers so it's debatable);
--- other spellings e.g. "Yuto" for "Yuuto";
- for other tag types: other names they're commonly known by (e.g. "Cogwheels" listed under an umbrella term,
Gears).
Aliases can be applied to a Series/Game/Character etc. using the following format:
NAME OF TAG alias NAME OF ALIAS
Which would be:
Gears alias Cogwheels
If you, by chance, spot a misspelled tag or think a certain name would be better, use the reverse version of the above
format. So, if I thought "Cogwheels" was a better term than "Gears", I'd report it as:
Cogwheels alias Gears
List of Main Tags
I don't know what you're referring to when you say this. You have all the tags listed here.
No offense but that guideline was like a bomb of words which makes little sense to
those whom aren't experienced in tagging.
I wasn't experienced in tagging when I started (how could I be?) and I naturally made my fair share of mistakes, but I
kept monitoring the TagAdmin thread and reading what the Elites/Mods posted concerning the correct format. When I was
sure I had it down, I started adding tags and came here to ask questions about the process. Concerning the FAQ, this
group is essentially the FAQ part, since you can ask questions here and see what is being discussed.
